This package combines historical exploration with physical activity over three days. It covers areas central to Inca development and natural formations in the Andes.
Travelers start in valleys known for their role in past societies. The environment supports diverse plant growth at reduced heights compared to higher cities.
The sequence includes stops at constructed zones from ancient times. These demonstrate planning in farming and living spaces.
Guidance focuses on the functions of each area. Specialists provide context on how locations served communities.
An overnight placement near the primary site allows for timely visits. This setup aids in observing light changes at dawn.
The final portion involves a climb to a colorful geological feature. This contrasts with the warmer conditions of previous days.
Return concludes in the starting city. The design fits those seeking variety in experiences without extended duration.
Day 1: Pisac – Moray – Maras – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes
Day 2: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
Day 3: Cusco – Rainbow Mountain – Cusco
Pickup begins at your Cusco hotel at 7:30 a.m. You’ll travel in the comfort of Peceros Expeditions’s private transportation, driven by highly trained professionals who ensure a smooth and safe journey.
As you leave Cusco, the road opens toward the Sacred Valley, revealing wide Andean landscapes. Your first stop is the Taray viewpoint, a natural balcony overlooking the vast Urubamba Valley. From here, you can observe the patchwork of farmlands—centuries-old agricultural traditions still alive in the present day.
Continue onward to the archaeological site of Pisac. You’ll have about two hours to explore this impressive complex. Walk through the ancient Inca cemetery carved into the cliffs, observe the sweeping agricultural terraces that contour the mountain, and pass through an Inca-carved tunnel that leads you toward the ceremonial sector. Peceros Expeditions’s multilingual guides bring the history to life with clear, detailed explanations.
Afterward, descend to the colorful Pisac market and spend around 20 minutes browsing crafts and local products. Then drive to Urubamba for lunch (not included), a chance to taste regional flavors.
The journey continues to Moray, a remarkable agricultural laboratory built by the Incas. The circular terraces create different microclimates on each level, allowing ancient farmers to test crops from diverse environments. Your guide will explain the engineering behind the stone walls and the soil transported from various regions.
Next, visit Maras to admire the famous salt pans from above. Thousands of small evaporation pools cascade down the hillside, each belonging to local families who inherit them through generations. Natural spring water flows through the channels, leaving behind the distinctive pink salt prized since pre-Inca times.
Arrive in Ollantaytambo, a living Inca town with original streets and water canals. Explore the archaeological site and climb to the Sun Temple, where your guide recounts stories of early resistance against invaders. Enjoy dinner nearby before boarding your 7:04 p.m. train. Choose between a standard service or a panoramic option with broader windows for scenic viewing.
By 8:45 p.m., you reach Aguas Calientes. Check into a comfortable 3-star hotel such as Ferre. A representative stays informed of your arrival and ensures everything is in order.
Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel in Aguas Calientes
Enjoy an early breakfast at the hotel before taking one of the first buses to Machu Picchu, aiming to witness the mystical site as the sun rises over the peaks.
A guided tour of approximately two hours explores the agricultural terraces, residential zones, and sacred temples. Your guide explains how the Incas supported crop growth, how ancient families organized their living spaces, and the spiritual significance of the major ceremonial structures. Architectural details and construction techniques deepen your appreciation of this Wonder of the World.
If you have tickets arranged, you may hike Huayna Picchu on your own. Otherwise, take time to wander, reflect, and capture stunning views. Later, return by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). Depending on your schedule, you can browse local shops, visit the small museum, or relax in the thermal springs.
Your train back to Ollantaytambo departs at 2:55 p.m. or 3:20 p.m. A Vistadome upgrade is available at those same times or at 4:22 p.m. and 4:43 p.m. for an additional $67. The journey follows the Urubamba River through narrow canyons, offering glimpses of Wiñay Wayna and lush cloud forest scenery.
Your private driver awaits in Ollantaytambo for the final transfer to Cusco. You arrive at your hotel around 7:00 p.m.
Note: Sun Gate and Inca Bridge access cost $55 each as of June 1, 2024.
Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Cusco, such as Qoricancha Waman
You’ll be picked up at 4:00 a.m. and travel south for approximately three hours to Llacto, located at 4,638 meters. Along the way, the scenery shifts from fertile valleys to high Andean plains dotted with villages, terraced hillsides, and snowcapped peaks.
Enjoy breakfast near the trailhead before beginning your trek. As you walk, you’ll see alpacas and llamas grazing calmly in the fields. The path follows a gentle stream and offers clear views of Ausangate, one of the most sacred mountains in the region. You may encounter locals dressed in traditional Quechua clothing—your guide explains the symbolism behind their colorful hats and teaches a few simple Quechua phrases.
The hike takes about 1.5 hours until you reach Rainbow Mountain. Spend roughly 30 minutes at the summit taking photos and admiring the natural colors created by mineral-rich layers. Those with extra energy can extend their visit with a 45-minute walk to the viewpoint of the Red Valley.
Return the same way, taking about one hour to descend. A freshly prepared lunch by the cook awaits you, offering local flavors from the Andes. Afterward, travel three hours back to Cusco and arrive at your hotel around 6:30 p.m. Guides provide route information, and a representative stays updated throughout your journey.
