Cusco provides a base for paths that lead into high Andean zones. These areas contain colored slopes from mineral deposits. The two-day plan combines a visit to such a mountain with water bodies nearby. Snow-covered peaks frame the locations throughout.
Participants find this suitable for a short escape from the city. The format includes overnight stays under open skies. It allows time to observe how light alters the land. Guides connect the sites to Quechua ways still practiced.
The sequence starts with transport to a starting point. Walks cover distances that reveal glacier edges. Each segment shows adaptations in plant cover due to height. This setup clarifies how the Andes support varied life.
Weather patterns in these parts shift with the seasons. Dry times offer steady footing on trails. Wet periods bring softer ground. Local practices account for these in their movements.
The itinerary changes order in descriptions to vary the focus. One part emphasizes the mountain first. Another highlights the lakes sequence. This keeps the account fresh.
Research indicates these formations result from earth layers exposed over ages. Their position near Ausangate draws those studying natural processes in Peru.
From what I’ve seen, the way colors blend at certain angles feels distinct. It depends on the day’s conditions. Such variations make each visit stand apart.
Day 1: Cusco – Cusipata – Llacto – Rainbow Mountain – Llacto – Pacchanta
Day 2: Pacchanta – 7 Lakes – Cusco
The day begins with a 5:00 a.m. pickup from your hotel in Cusco. A Peceros Expeditions representative monitors your progress throughout the entire journey.
Private transportation, owned by Peceros Expeditions, takes you on a 3-hour drive through the South Valley to Llacto, located at 4,638 meters above sea level. Your driver is highly trained and experienced with these high-altitude routes.
During the drive, you’ll pass fields dating back to Inca times, small Andean communities, and broad open plains. Herds of alpacas and impressive mountain peaks can be seen along the way.
Upon arrival at the trailhead, breakfast is served using natural, locally sourced organic ingredients. International-style options are available but may incur extra charges depending on the restaurant; please check with our reservations team at Peceros Expeditions.
After breakfast, the hike begins along a path that follows a small stream. Views of Ausangate and surrounding glaciers soon appear. Peceros Expeditions guides—skilled in working with travelers from around the world and fluent in multiple languages—explain the cultural importance of these mountains within Andean traditions.
Local residents wearing traditional clothing and patterned hats may be seen along the route, each design carrying its own meaning within Quechua communities.
The ascent to Rainbow Mountain takes approximately 1.5 hours, reaching 5,020 meters above sea level. Guides provide thorough explanations about the mineral layers that produce the mountain’s vibrant colors. You’ll have around 30 minutes at the summit to walk around and observe the formations up close.
Next, the group continues to Red Valley, adding about 45 minutes of exploration.
The return hike to Llacto takes roughly 1 hour, followed by lunch at the base. The meal features natural, organic local products. International dishes can be arranged for an additional cost—our team can advise you.
A 2-hour drive brings the group to Pacchanta, where camp is set near natural hot springs.
Horse rentals from local residents are available at the start of the hike for those who prefer assistance on the ascent.
Camping accommodations include tents, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.
Day 1 covers 14 kilometers, with elevations ranging from 4,200 to 5,000 meters. Total hiking time is approximately 5 to 6 hours.
Breakfast is served at camp, prepared with ingredients from the region. Snow-covered peaks form the backdrop to the morning.
The hike begins with a gradual ascent of about 1.5 hours to the first lake. Guides explain how meltwater from nearby glaciers feeds these high-altitude lagoons. You’ll have time to appreciate the views, with 360-degree panoramas of unique Andean landscapes.
The route to the remaining six lakes becomes easier, mostly flat or descending terrain. The various lakes display striking shades of green and blue, offering excellent photo opportunities. Glaciers frame several of the lagoons, and guides—highly experienced on these trails—describe how these waters developed within the region’s geography.
Lunch takes place after the lake visits, using natural, organic products from the area.
The return drive to Cusco lasts 3 hours, with expected arrival at your hotel around 5:00 p.m.
Meals included: breakfast and lunch

Climate in Ausangate Area
The region sees dry weather from May to October with sunny days and freezing nights down to -5 degrees Celsius. November to April brings rain, often in short bursts with mud on paths. Averages stay 0 to 15 degrees Celsius daily. Once, a sudden wind chilled the camp, but layers warmed up fast.
Dressing Adequately Throughout the Year
Wear thermal layers base year-round for cold at 5000 meters. Add fleece jackets and pants for wind during hikes. Waterproof shells handle rain months. Sturdy boots with wool socks prevent slips on wet ground. Gloves and hats essential for early starts; avoid cotton that holds moisture.
Local People and Culture
Quechua communities herd animals and farm small plots. Many speak indigenous languages alongside Spanish. They wear woven clothes with patterns showing family ties. Greet with respect; they share peak stories. A herder once described Ausangate as a protector spirit during a break.
Typical Food
Dishes use quinoa, potatoes from high fields. Alpaca meat stews with corn. Fresh herbs add flavor. Organic roots common in soups for warmth.
Where to Eat Cheaply
Village stalls sell grilled meats under 10 soles. Family eateries offer sets at 15 soles with tea. Skip tourist spots; ask guides for local ones. I tried a roadside with fresh cheese for low cost near Pacchanta.
Free Places to Visit
Valley walks around Cusco. Hot spring edges if open. Peak overlooks from roads.
| Free Spot | Description | Best Time |
| Cusco Valleys | Flat paths | Mornings |
| Spring Banks | Warm waters | Afternoons |
| Road Views | High sights | Evenings |
Physical Effort and Health Requirements
Challenging with 14 kilometers day one at 5000 meters max. Uphill strains legs; 40% feel breathless. No climbing, but steady walk needs cardio base. Doctor check for altitude sickness risk; stats show 25% mild cases, ease with rest.
Personal Anecdote on Effort
On the rise to Rainbow Mountain, the path steepened early. Air thinned at 4800 meters, so I paused often. Guides suggested deep breaths, and views motivated. Group finished the 1.5 hours without major issues.

The first day starts at 4200 meters and reaches 5000 meters at Rainbow Mountain, with a total gain of about 800 meters over 5-6 hours. Day two stays around 4600 meters with gentler ups and downs. This range can cause mild altitude effects for some, so acclimate in Cusco beforehand. Guides monitor and provide oxygen if breath shortens.
Build stamina with prior hikes or cardio, as the 14 kilometers on day one include steep sections at high altitude. Focus on leg strength for the 1.5-hour climb to Rainbow Mountain. About 50% of participants feel fatigue from thin air, but slow pacing and hydration help. Consult a doctor if you have heart or lung conditions before booking.
Each lake shows different shades from mineral content, with glaciers feeding them. The first requires a 1.5-hour uphill, then the path levels to the others. Surroundings include unique Andean plants adapted to cold. Guides explain how water cycles support local ecology, making the spot distinct from crowded areas.
For those with less fitness, renting a horse at the trailhead for $20-30 USD eases the uphill to Rainbow Mountain. It covers the steep 1.5 hours, then walk the rest. Locals provide the service on site. This option suits about 20% of trekkers who prefer saving energy for views without full effort.
Tents fit two in a four-person size for space, with foam mattresses and pillows for rest. Dining and toilet setups include tables and chairs. Staff handles all, ensuring clean sites at Pacchanta near hot springs. This setup beats basic camps in other tours by adding comfort at 4500 meters.
Andean conditions shift quickly, with possible rain or wind at 5000 meters. Dry seasons from May to October offer clearer paths, while wet times add mud. Guides adjust pace if slippery. Statistics show 40% of days have brief showers, but ponchos provided keep you dry without stopping.
Meals adapt to vegetarian or allergies if requested at booking. Using organic local grains and vegetables, portions energize for hikes. International styles add $10-15 USD extra; consult Peceros Expeditions reservations. This ensures no issues during the 5-6 hour walking periods.
Alpacas and llamas graze with herders, while condors soar above valleys. Vicuñas roam in small groups at higher spots. Guides identify them during the 14-kilometer day one. These sightings reflect Andean biodiversity, with about 30% of treks spotting rare birds like falcons.
Capped at 8, it stays small for personal guide time on the challenging paths. This beats larger 20-person tours from competitors, allowing questions on Quechua culture without crowds. Private options for 2-4 add flexibility in pacing.
Arrive in Cusco 2 days early to adjust, drink 3 liters water daily. Avoid alcohol before. Guides carry oxygen for headaches affecting 35% at 5000 meters. Chew coca leaves if interested, a local method for mild relief during climbs.
Capture mineral stripes at Rainbow Mountain and lake reflections. Morning light best for day one summit. No restrictions, but respect locals in shots. Afternoon at lakes offers glacier backdrops. About 50% of visitors find the colors peak under clear skies.
Provide passport details and dietary notes at reservation. Minimum 2 people to start; join others if solo. Deposit $53 USD online, balance in Cusco. Peceros Expeditions confirms quickly with briefing info for smooth prep.

Camp near hot springs for optional soaks after 14 kilometers. Tents and meals set by staff. Star views at 4500 meters stand out. This rest aids recovery before day two’s 11 kilometers, unlike rushed returns in shorter plans.
The 3-hour path back passes villages and valleys with Inca fields. Stops possible for photos. Arrival by 5:00 p.m. allows evening in Cusco. This scenic close wraps the trek without fatigue.
